It is also relevant because racial tensions and the death of Dr. King affected the view point of black men further during the time of his trial. While historically, people of color tend to serve harder sentences and are put behind bars more frequently, the tensions of the time, certainly contributed in this case.
Very clear evidence from this case showed that Branion could not have committed the murder of his wife. That he had an air-tight alibi that evidence supported. Despite this, he was still convicted of the murder of his wife. It took over 20 years for his sentence to be commuted and only because he needed dire medical care. He sadly, lost life, which may have been avoided if he had received the medical care available to free citizens.
I highly recommend a look at this case, especially if, like me, you enjoy true crime and history. We should always understand miscarriages of justice so that we don't allow them to be repeated. If you stream on Amazon Prime, the Unsolved Mysteries episode covers it well. They do not however, include it's tragic conclusion. Unsolved Mysteries does discuss those who worked diligently for the innocence of John Branion. There are books and internet articles available as well. The most tragic of all this, is that that his wife was callously murdered and those responsible were never brought to justice. Something that her family must live with and is another tragedy of justice.
